Daily updates: Bill Gates' top 10 Breakthrough technologies of2019.

Bill Gates’ top 10 breakthrough technologies of 2019.

Writer: Timothy Sirma

Dailysunnews9ja

With a personal fortune estimated at $96 billion, Bill Gates is the world’s second wealthiest person, ahead of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg ($60 billion) but some way behind Jeff Bezos of Amazon ($135 billion).

Since founding Microsoft, Gates has become a leading player in a new wave of philanthropy.

Through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, he has invested heavily in research into malaria and Alzheimer’s and given billions of dollars to fund health and education initiatives.

It’s perhaps not surprising then that when he turned his attention to the 10 Breakthrough Technologies list for the MIT Technology Review innovations that strive to do good, as well as to achieve commercial success feature prominently.

In conversation with MIT Technology Review , he explains the rationale behind his top 10 choices.
Three of his top 10 focus on reducing the planet’s dependence on fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions. There’s already a great deal of work underway in the developed world on expanding the use of renewables.

But Gates is at pains to point out the real challenges lie elsewhere: “... when you say to India, ‘Provide electricity to everyone to have things we take for granted – heating, air conditioning.’ Their path is to build more coal plants. That’s the cheapest form of electricity for them.”

Similarly, one breakthrough technology is a toilet which functions without being connected to a sewer network.
Dailysunnews9ja

The reason Gates sees this as crucial is that in many parts of the developing world, the infrastructure costs for building a network of sewers and sanitation are simply too high. Added to which, 844 million people don’t have enough clean water to drink, let alone for flushing toilets.

Instead, Gates believes a toilet that can filter wet waste, and separate out solids for safe incineration, can deliver a huge improvement in health and quality of life without astronomical investment. It’s a pragmatic take on a seemingly intractable
problem.

That outlook is also in evidence with another of his choices – animal-free meat.

“Only about a quarter of emissions come from electricity generation,” he says. “This is a category that people weren’t paying much attention to as a greenhouse-gas problem. And yet I think the path to solve it is clearer than in, say, cement or steel or other materials.”

Lab-grown meat and plant-based alternatives are two potential alternatives to the currently meat-rich diet of many parts of the world , and would help reduce some of the resource-consumption related to livestock farming.

These alternatives could also free up stocks of grains and pulses currently used as animal food and divert them to feed the world’s growing population.

The inspiration for some of the top 10 came from one of Gates’ favourite pastimes – reading.

“Reading is my favourite way to learn about a new subject – whether it’s global health, quantum computing, or world history,” he says.

From the importance of sanitation (covered in Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo) to the future of humankind in an AI-centric future (Life 3.0 by Max Tegmark and Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari), the list of top 10 tech books Gates has pulled together illustrates how he is driven by a thirst for new ideas.

Even though some of those books contain bleak, even dystopic views of the future, Gates describes himself as an optimist and believes a more inclusive, more holistic use of technology can make inroads into people’s quality of life.

“Look at how long people are living, the reduction of under-five mortality, the reduction in how poorly women are treated,” he says. “Globally, inequity is down: poorer countries are getting richer faster than the richer countries are getting richer.”

Breaking News: Safety concerns raised over breast implants

Safety concerns raised over breast implants

An investigation has raised safety concerns about the most commonly used type of silicone breast implant in the UK.

Dailysunnews9ja

Women in France are now being advised not to use "textured" silicone implants while authorities investigate links with a rare form of cancer.

British women are still having the implants put in and there has been no warning from the UK regulator to stop.

It says it will take action when it sees there is a problem.

A Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA) spokesman said: "We know that there are ongoing concerns about the safety of silicone breast implants - we're keeping a very close eye on that."

Manufacturers say the safety of the implants is supported by extensive testing and studies, as well as more than a decade of use in America and Europe.

The BBC's Panorama programme has been investigating implants with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and organisations around the world, including the Guardian newspaper and the British Medical Journal.

'Mortified'

Janet Trelawny had breast cancer over 20 years ago. Her breasts were removed and replaced with textured implants.

Dailysunnews9ja

Now, she has been diagnosed with breast implant associated lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

It is not breast cancer but a type of cancer of the immune system.

In most cases, it is found in the scar tissue and fluid near the implant. But in some, it can spread throughout the body.

She said: "It's frightening to think that something that I'd done because I've had a cancer previously has then caused me to get cancer again.

"I was absolutely mortified. I'm frightened that this can happen and I had no idea."

Janet is waiting for further biopsy results and has been told she will need to have chemotherapy to treat her cancer.

Under investigation

The French have been investigating breast implants since 2011, when they started receiving reports of BIA-ALCL.

The risks of developing it after an implant vary around the world but are thought to be very small.

As of September 2018, the MHRA has received 57 reports of ALCL in patients with breast implants, 45 of which meet specific diagnostic criteria.

That puts the estimated risk of BIA-ALCL at about one per 24,000 implants.

BIA-ALCL appears to have occurred with textured implants made by every manufacturer, according to the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons (BAAPS).

Breast implants come with different fillings and different surfaces - smooth and textured.

In the UK, 99% of breast implants used are textured, according to BAAPS.

More checks

Dr Suzanne Turner, an expert in breast implant associated lymphoma at Cambridge University, said: "It is a concern, absolutely, particularly now that we're seeing breast implant associated lymphoma developing in these ladies.

"So, the risk is small but it's a risk that we should know about and be informed of."

The investigation discovered that some manufacturers did not carry out adequate tests before selling textured implants to the public.

These tests are called biocompatibility tests and they assess how the body responds to a product.

The manufacturers argued the tests were unnecessary but the French regulator said: "Almost all of the arguments put forward by the manufacturers were considered to be unacceptable for justifying the lack of biocompatibility tests."

Some manufacturers now say that they have completed the necessary biocompatibility tests.

But the secrecy around the regulatory system does not allow us to see what was done.

The investigation has also found out that manufacturers in Europe and America have under-reported problems with breast implants.

Some haven't told regulators when the implants rupture, because they say it's a routine event.

Nobody knows the scale of the risks, because the implants haven't been adequately tracked when they've been put into people and problems may take years to develop.

A register for breast implants was set up in 2016 but at the moment it's still voluntary.

Carl Heneghan, professor of evidence based medicine at Oxford University, says campaigners have been asking for a register for 25 years.

"Every implant should be in a register because that's what defines patient safety. In the absence of that, we're in the dark."

Breaking News: SEE The Terrible Thing That Happened To Lady's Head After She Used A Hair Dye (Photos)

SEE The Terrible Thing That Happened To Lady's Head After She Used A Hair Dye (Photos)

Healthy Living
Dailysunnews9ja

A woman's head doubled in size after a horrific allergic reaction to a common hair dye that left her struggling to breathe.

19-year-old English student Estelle, from Paris, shared photos showing her shocking disfigurement caused by the chemical PPD, which is found in 90 percent of hair dyes.

Estele had bought a standard DIY hair dye from a supermarket in Val-de-Marne, on the outskirts of Paris. But, she stunned social media in France after she posted her allergic reaction to PPD, in which her face looks increasingly swollen and raw.

The horrific reaction had first caused her scalp to itch before the top of head started to swell up. Estelle had attempted to treat herself using antihistamines and cream from a pharmacist but she awoke the next day to catch a glimpse of her inflated reflection.

Speaking to French daily Le Parisien, Estelle said: “I could still see; here I was struggling to breathe."

“My forehead had doubled in volume. My head was like a light bulb”.

Her tongue started to swell up and she was rushed her to the hospital where the circumference of her head now measured 63 cm rather than the average 56.

Estelle, who had previously suffered a mild reaction to a different hair dye, had even used the allergy test that comes with the product.

But, instead of waiting the recommended 48 hours, the teen applied the dye after just 30 minutes.

Despite this, Estelle's mother believes there should be greater awareness of the dangers behind PPD.

He mother argued: “It’s true that she didn’t follow the instructions word for word but the warning has to be clearer." PPD, the abbreviation for paraphenylenediamine, is also used in high concentrations in the popular black henna tattoos.

It is the prime cause of allergic reaction to hair dye and is needed for most shades of permanent colour, especially dark shades. There is a strict limit on PPD concentration at a maximum of 2 percent and the chemical is banned in other cosmetics.

Estelle now wants her dreadful experience to act as a warning to other women who dye their hair.

She added: "I almost died, I don't want something similar to happen to other people." Culled from SunUK

Daily updates: Brazil President Sacks Close Aide Amid Political Scandal

Brazil President Sacks Close Aide Amid Political Scandal

Dailysunnews9ja

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro/ AFP

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday sacked a close aide who helped get him elected after a storm within his party over suspected improper campaign financing.

The allegations are the latest scandal to hit the party of the far-right president, who comfortably won elections last October in large part by vowing to stamp out corruption.

Bolsonaro “has decided to dismiss as of today Gustavo Bebianno as minister of the general secretariat of the presidency,” spokesman Otavio do Rego Barros told a news conference in Brazilia.

The spokesman did not explain the firing, saying it was a “personal decision” by Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro did not clarify much further in a video he released later that was broadcast by Brazilian media.

He said only that “different points of view on relevant issues brought a need for a re-evaluation.”

The president recognized Bebianno had played a vital role in his election campaign. “His work was important to our success,” Barros said.

The sacking could impact legislative passage of an upcoming bill Bolsonaro is to present to Congress this week to reform Brazil’s unsustainable pension system. The reform is considered by investors to be the most crucial promise the president made to overhaul Latin America’s biggest economy.

Bebianno, who held cabinet rank and was the former leader of the ultraconservative PSL, was replaced by a retired general, Floriano Peixoto, boosting to eight the number of military men running Bolsonaro’s 22 ministries.

Key figure
As chief of the ruling PSL party, Bebianno had been a key figure in Bolsonaro’s campaign last year that led to the 63-year-old politician being elected in October polls. When Bolsonaro took office at the beginning of January he rewarded Bebianno with the ministerial post by his side in the presidential palace.

But that close alliance became broken after a newspaper, the Folha de Sao Paulo, reported that the PSL was thought to have nominated fake candidates in the general election to divert public funds to its coffers.

Bebianno had denied involvement and sought to downplay the crisis. He also said he had spoken several times with Bolsonaro while the president spent the first half of this month in the hospital recovering from stomach surgery.

But one of Bolsonaro’s sons, Carlos Bolsonaro, who is a state legislator in Rio de Janeiro, said Bebianno was “lying” and no such discussions took place. He also said he had asked for a police investigation against Bebianno.

That triggered ructions in the PSL and among allies of the president, who questioned why Carlos — who has no position in the presidency or federal government — was permitted to act that way against Bebianno.

After several days of back-and-forth among top officials, Bolsonaro — who campaigned on pledges to clean up political corruption — acted Monday by firing Bebianno.

Bolsonaro’s reputation has been further sullied by suspicions of illegal financial transactions surrounding another of Bolsonaro’s sons, Flavio, who is a senator.

A third politician son, Eduardo, a federal lawmaker, has embraced a nationalist politics platform created by Steve Bannon, US President Donald Trump’s former strategist.

Bebianno’s dismissal, anticipated by investors, prompted a 1.04 percent fall in the stock market Monday, and a dip in the value of the Brazilian real.

Court Allow Schools To Ban Wearing Of Hijab in Kenya

Kenya court allow schools to ban the wearing of hijab

Schools in Kenya ban the wearing of Hijab

Opinion is divided following the Supreme Courts decision to give schools discretion on how Muslim learners should dress.

The argument is on whether the ruling on Thursday, that overturned one in September 2016 by the Court of Appeal, is discriminatory and unnecessary.

The appellate court had allowed Muslim girls to wear the hijab as part of the school uniform- the requirement is for the hijab to be worn over the head to preserve dignity.

"ISLAMOPHOBIA"

Among those who gave their views on the matter was Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who said the judgment was “inspired by a poisonous evangelical jurisprudence that repudiate the rights of Muslim pupils to wear a hijab".

He added that the court “showed an unacceptable degree of Islamophobia”.

In a tweet, the counsel wondered whether the Supreme Court is a unifying court or divisive court and said the country urgently needs national dialogue on the court.

DISBELIEF

Twitter user Monica Wanjiru wondered how wearing the attire would amount to disobeying school rules.

“It’s only a scarf [yet] allowing a girl to have it can be the difference that ensures she gets an education. We need to support [children so they can] stay in school, not create marginalisation through unnecessary sanctions,” Wanjiru argued.

One Muthoni said, "Why is Kenya’s Supreme Court policing women’s clothing? How can they ban hijabs in schools?”

Twitter user Giggs Yule Mmoja wrote, "It is only in Kenya where Supreme Court judges cover their heads and ban religious hijabs for school going Muslims."

All but judge Jackton Ojwang dissented the move.

PRECEDENT

Kigen Koech said the Ministry of Education should intervene just as it did with the issue of the Rastafarian schoolgirl who was expelled from Olympic High School in Kibera.

“Female Muslim schoolgirls have a right to express their religion through the hijab,” Mr Koech opined.

Dikembe Disembe disagreed with the those oppose the ruling, calling them hypocrites.

“Those who celebrated Starehe Boys’ discriminatory yellow forms are now fuming and frothing in their mouths because the Supreme Court has given schools discretion to decide the question of the hijab,” he said.

FIGHT

Ijara lawmaker Sophia Abdi Noor said that they will consult experts and determine the next course of action while nominated Senator Falhada Iman said that the Muslim community will not take the matter lightly.

The leaders vowed to fight the ruling, including in international courts.

On Thursday, the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya and Haki Africa, a Mombasa-based non-governmental organisation, protested against the decision terming i “unfair” to Muslims.

CIPK Organising Secretary Sheikh Mohammed Khalifa said the decision by the top court was against the Constitution.

Insurgency: Buhari, Other Lake Chad Basin Leaders Meet In Abuja

Insurgency: Buhari, Other Lake Chad Basin Leaders Meet In Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of the Lake Chad Basin countries are currently in a meeting in Abuja.

Presidents of Chad, Niger, Central African Republic and Cameroon are in attendance at the meeting and President Buhari is the chairman.

The leaders during the meeting considered the report of the Defence and Security committee set up by the leaders in Ndjamena, Chad earlier in December.

The committee’s report is expected to overhaul strategies to counter Boko Haram and other security threat in order to stabilise the region.

Dailysunnews9ja

President Buhari during the opening ceremony of the meeting said he believes that military strategy must be complemented by the mobilisation and deployment of adequate resources.

According to him, this will ensure reconstruction, rehabilitation, and rebuilding of civil authority and provision of relief to affected persons.

The meeting holds a month after President Buhari traveled to N’djamena Chad to convene a similar meeting to review the security situation and intensify the efforts to end the insurgency in the region.

Since Ronaldo Has Scored Only 1 Goal In This UCL, Is It Safe To Say That He Has Finally Declined From Peak?

Christiano Ronaldo is already past his peak. That was achieved in 2014/15 when he scored 61 goals in one season. I don’t think this is a secret for anyone.

For this reason, he is used strategically. As long as he maintains a good goal ratio he will be used more and more selectively and in more important games. Also the UCL season is in its round robin stages so he’s not played quite the 13 UCL games so far which gave him 15 goals last year.

But yes, 1 goal in 4 games is sufficient return for Juventus in UCL as they have advanced to the next round. CR7 still remains an ace forward who has an established reputation for scoring important goals in crucial fixtures.

Angela Merkel admits that 'no-go zones' exist in Germany

Angela Merkel admits that 'no-go zones' exist in Germany

German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a major concession to Europe's populist movement this week when she admitted the existence of so-called “no-go zones” in Germany.
Conservatives and populists have long warned of the existence of such zones as the partial consequence of mass Muslim migration from the Middle East and Africa, particularly after Merkel opened Germany’s borders in 2015 as a response to the Syrian refugee crisis. Such areas are said to be dogged by high-levels of crime and are described as "no-go zones" because outsiders, including police and other authorities, are unable to enter.
REFUGEE INFLUX INTO GERMANY FUELED VIOLENT CRIME SURGE, REPORT FINDS

Despite evidence of the existence of areas in Western countries, European leaders and left-wing media commentators have long denied, and sometimes even mocked, those who claim that no-go zones exist.

But Merkel, who won Time Magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2015 in part because of her open-borders stance, mentioned their existence in an interview this week with German broadcaster n-tv as she called for a zero-tolerance policy on crime.

She said that people have a right to feel safe when they meet in public places. When asked to clarify, she specified that she was talking about no-go zones.

“It means for example that there cannot be any no-go areas, that there cannot be areas where no-one dares to go but there are such places,” she said. “One has to call them by name and do something about it.”

The Associated Press reported that it had left fellow lawmakers “speechless.” The remarks quickly spread across Europe, fueling and encouraging nationalist-populist politicians who have pushed back against lax immigration policies.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government, which has been under siege from the European Union for its hardline stance on asylum seekers, hailed Merkel’s comments as a victory.

EUROPEAN LEADERS, FACING GROWING PUBLIC UNEASE, TOUGHEN UP ON IMMIGRATION

“Today, it seems this taboo has been broken. Guess who is talking about ‘no-go zones’?” a blog post on the Hungarian government’s official website said.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, attends a meeting of the Christian Social Union party, CSU in Seeon, Germany, Friday, Jan. 5, 2018. The CSU is the Bavarian-only sister party of German chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats. (Andreas Gebert/dpa via AP)
Hungary's Orban hailed the remark from Merkel
“That we’re finally calling them by name signals a step in the right direction,” it said.
Others were not convinced. Douglas Murray, author of "The Strange Death of Europe" told Fox News that it was the latest example of Merkel saying one thing but doing another. He noted that in 2010, Merkel declared in Potsdam that multiculturalism had "utterly failed," only then to massively increase immigration just a few years later.

"She is the master of being able to say the headline-grabbing thing, while doing absolutely nothing to stop the reality from worsening, and then doing everything to make it infinitely worse," he said.
Murray also questioned to what extent the remarks have to do with her precarious political standing in Germany.

"This is an admission of reality, and the question is whether it is a cynical admission or not," he said.
Merkel has emerged bruised from a weaker-than-expected election result in the German federal elections in September. While her Christian Democrats emerged with the most votes, the rise of the right-wing and anti-migrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) ate into her party’s lead and left her scrambling for months for a coalition deal.

During the campaign, Merkel had sought to fend off criticism from the AfD and members of her own party by shifting to the right and taking a tougher stance on migration and Islamic immigration. In December 2016, she said that the 2015 migration surge “cannot, should not and must not be repeated.”

She appears to have succeeded, with her party now finalizing a drawn out negotiation with its former coalition partners -- the left-wing Social Democrats (SPD.) The SPD is currently voting on whether to enter a new coalition. If it does, it will allow a weakened Merkel to serve a fourth term as chancellor.

Should the SPD reject the deal, Merkel’s party will have to decide whether to form a minority government or call for new elections. The result of the SPD vote will be announced Sunday.

N40,000 Per Hour: First S*x Doll Brothel Opens

Well, the bizarre sex doll which has become a talk of the town across many nations has finally reached Germany, with the country’s first s*x doll-only brothel opening for business.

29-year-old Evelyn Schwarz, runs the aptly named ‘Bordoll’ in Dortmund, Germany – A fusion of the words ‘bordello’ and ‘doll’.

Originally looking into S&M, Schwarz instead decided to buy 11 silicone ‘love dolls’ each of which she gave a unique name.

The five stone sex dolls are imported from Asia and cost her €2,000 (N880,000) each.

They all have different heights, hair colours and breast sizes. One sex doll is even made to look exactly like a blue-haired Japanese anime character.

It has been such a success that the dolls are booked around 12 times a day, costing €80 (£71) per hour.

See more photos:

So you can now buy an orgasm machine…
Yes you can…all you need is to buy anartificial sex doll companion like the flexible, human-like, 140cm tall and beautiful one made by WM Dolls.
The doll left Wha’anda flabbergasted because it looked just like a real human being naked.
You may think having sex with an inanimate human creation is gross, but when you see this doll, you might not know when you get your member out.
Strangely, the doll is so flexible with the breasts, butt, skin, vagina and every other part is intact and just too real!!!
From a distance, you would think a real woman is naked on the bed…
With something like this in the market, many men would opt out of sex with real human beings which will come with the attendant human relation issues.
This doll will do your bidding anytime, anyhow and anyway without asking questions.
It’s disturbingly too human though…

Another Deadly Super Flu OutBreak Makes Doctors Scared

Dailysunnews9ja HOME » NEWS »

Another outbreak of deadly flu make doctors scared

A century after one of history’s most catastrophic disease outbreaks — which killed tens of millions as it swept the globe — scientists are fighting to guard against a deadly new pandemic. There’s no way to predict what strain of the shape-shifting flu virus could spread across the planet or, given modern medical tools, how bad it might be.
But researchers hope they’re finally closing in on stronger flu jabs, ways to boost much-needed protection against ordinary winter influenza and guard against future pandemics at the same time.
Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health said: “We have to do better and by better, we mean a universal flu vaccine.“A vaccine that is going to protect you against essentially all, or most, strains of flu.”
Labs around the country are hunting for a super-shot that could eliminate the annual autumn vaccination in favor of one every five years or 10 years, or maybe, eventually, a childhood immunization that could last for life.

Fauci is designating a universal flu vaccine a top priority for NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Last summer, he brought together more than 150 leading researchers to map a path. A few attempts are entering first-stage human safety testing. But, despite 100 years of science, the flu virus too often beats humanity’s best defenses because it constantly mutates.Researchers are dissecting the cloak that disguises influenza as it sneaks past the immune system, and finding some rare targets that stay the same from strain to strain, year to year.
“We’ve made some serious inroads into understanding how we can better protect ourselves. Now we have to put that into fruition,” said well-known flu biologist Ian Wilson of The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.Back in 1918 there was no flu vaccine and it wouldn’t arrive for decades.Today vaccination is the best protection but at best, the seasonal vaccine is 60% effective.
Protection dropped to 19% a few years ago when the vaccine didn’t match an evolving virus. If a never-before-seen flu strain erupts, it takes months to brew a new vaccine.Doses arrived too late for the last, fortunately mild, pandemic in 2009.Lacking a better option, Fauci said the nation is “chasing” animal flu strains that might become the next human threat.
Today’s top concern is a lethal bird flu that jumped from poultry to more than 1,500 people in China since 2013.Last year it mutated, meaning millions of just-in-case vaccine doses in a US stockpile no longer match. While scientists hunt for answers, “it’s folly to predict” what a next pandemic might bring, Fauci said.
Chinese H7N9 bird flu “worries me a lot,” Dr. Taubenberger said. “For a virus like influenza that is a master at adapting and mutating and evolving to meet new circumstances, it’s crucially important to understand how these processes occur in nature.
“How does an avian virus become adapted to a mammal?”
While scientists hunt those answers, “it’s folly to predict” what a next pandemic might bring, Fauci said. “We just need to be prepared.
