Another outbreak of deadly flu make doctors scared

A century after one of history’s most catastrophic disease outbreaks — which killed tens of millions as it swept the globe — scientists are fighting to guard against a deadly new pandemic.There’s no way to predict what strain of the shape-shifting flu virus could spread across the planet or, given modern medical tools, how bad it might be.

But researchers hope they’re finally closing in on stronger flu jabs, ways to boost much-needed protection against ordinary winter influenza and guard against future pandemics at the same time.

Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health said: “We have to do better and by better, we mean a universal flu vaccine.“A vaccine that is going to protect you against essentially all, or most, strains of flu.”

Labs around the country are hunting for a super-shot that could eliminate the annual autumn vaccination in favor of one every five years or 10 years, or maybe, eventually, a childhood immunization that could last for life.

Fauci is designating a universal flu vaccine a top priority for NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Last summer, he brought together more than 150 leading researchers to map a path. A few attempts are entering first-stage human safety testing.But, despite 100 years of science, the flu virus too often beats humanity’s best defenses because it constantly mutates.Researchers are dissecting the cloak that disguises influenza as it sneaks past the immune system, and finding some rare targets that stay the same from strain to strain, year to year.

“We’ve made some serious inroads into understanding how we can better protect ourselves. Now we have to put that into fruition,” said well-known flu biologist Ian Wilson of The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.Back in 1918 there was no flu vaccine and it wouldn’t arrive for decades.Today vaccination is the best protection but at best, the seasonal vaccine is 60% effective.

Protection dropped to 19% a few years ago when the vaccine didn’t match an evolving virus.If a never-before-seen flu strain erupts, it takes months to brew a new vaccine.Doses arrived too late for the last, fortunately mild, pandemic in 2009.Lacking a better option, Fauci said the nation is “chasing” animal flu strains that might become the next human threat.

Today’s top concern is a lethal bird flu that jumped from poultry to more than 1,500 people in China since 2013.Last year it mutated, meaning millions of just-in-case vaccine doses in a US stockpile no longer match.While scientists hunt for answers, “it’s folly to predict” what a next pandemic might bring, Fauci said.

Chinese H7N9 bird flu “worries me a lot,” Dr. Taubenberger said. “For a virus like influenza that is a master at adapting and mutating and evolving to meet new circumstances, it’s crucially important to understand how these processes occur in nature.

“How does an avian virus become adapted to a mammal?”

While scientists hunt those answers, “it’s folly to predict” what a next pandemic might bring, Fauci said. “We just need to be prepared.

I am a 29-year old man. I have been in arelationship but distance is separating me from my love who is now living in a far-away state. I get tempted to date other women but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I cannot cheat on my love because we love each other and hope to re-unite very soon. We have vowed to live together and not betray each other.

Although we are not yet married, we are keeping it in view and besides, she is a good woman. But I masturbate and it worries me. Can one get any form of sickness from masturbating because I feel drained after engaging in the act?

A lot of people feel guilty after masturbating and some see it as cheating on their partner even though the act does not involve another sex partner. Besides, there is perceived spiritual dirtiness associated with the act. But the wonderful thing about masturbation is that you can’t catch a disease from yourself (or we must already have the disease). Sexually transmitted infections (STI) have to be caught from someone who has the infection.

They spread by rubbing of skin-to-skin or transferring of body fluidin sex with a partner. This is a reason why condoms protect because they prevent body fluid going from partner to another and reduce skin-to-skin contact.Touching ourselves for pleasure with masturbation is something most people do especially if they don’t have asexual partner.

It’s natural to feel some pent-up sexual frustration and masturbation can relieve that. There has been a lot of fears and claims that masturbation was bad or a risk. But this has usually been a moral or religious view that it is wrong to masturbate.Herpes has to be caught from someone who has it. What might confuse people is that herpes is usually around the mouth but can be spread to the genitals by touch or oral sex. But we don’t usually spread our own herpes further because our body has made antibodies to control the virus that causes herpes....

Five months after shooting his colleague and lover to death, a jealous Airforce officer has been sentenced to death by hanging.

the judgment which started at about 9 am on Tuesday, August 15, dragged till 4 pm when it was stood down before the panelists reconvened at 7.30 pm to pass their judgment.
The Judge Advocate, Flight Lieutenant M.A. Umoh, who read out the 70-page court findings which lasted for about two hours, listed the eight-count charges against the 21-year-old Airman Kalu to include murder, attempted murder, house breaking, impersonation, murder, among others.
The defense counsel, Abimiku Ewuga who urged the court to temper justice with mercy, said the accused was his family breadwinner but the President of the court, Group Capt. Elisha Bindul, rejected the plea and found the accused guilty in six out of the eight counts, and sentenced him to death by hanging, subject to the confirmation of the conveying authority.
Recall that Airman Kalu had shot Oladipupo, aka Shomzy, to death at her Corporal and Below Quarters, Compound 9, Air Force Base, Makurdi, on the suspicion that she was cheating on him with a member of the National Youth Service Corps serving in the state.
After shooting her to death, Airman Kalu had tried to commit suicide after leaving a suicide note detailing the reasons he had to take the step of murdering his lover.
The murder of the young lady had raised a lot of dust with Nigerians urging the Airforce authority to bring the suspect to book and make sure he paid for his crimes.

A military tribunal set up by the Nigerian Air Force has sentencedAirman Ben Kalu to death by hanging after he was found guilty of shooting his lover, Airwoman Solape Oladipupo, to death on March 12, 2017.....

In his remarks, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, said the signing of the treaties was a clear demonstration of Nigeria’s determination to continue to play its role as a responsible member of the international community.

Other legal instruments between Nigeria and UAE signed by the President included the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters; Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Civil and Commercial Matters and the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.

The President also signed the Charter for the Lake Chad Basin between Nigeria, Cameroun, Central African Republic, Libya, Niger and the Republic of Chad, African Tax Administration Forum Agreement on Mutual Assistance in Tax Matters.

Others are the World Intellectual Property Organisation Performances and Phonograms Treaty; The World Intellectual Property Organization Treaty on Audio-Visual Performances.The Marrakesh Treaty to facilitate access to published works for persons, who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise was also signed by the President.The signing of the agreements was witnessed by Ambassadors of the United Kingdom, USA, Ireland, Chad, and Head of the European Union (EU) to Nigeria as well as some cabinet ministers and presidential aides

Rodents ravage President Buhari’s office

The Senior Special Assistant to the President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Shehu Garba, has said that the president’s office was ravaged by rodents during the his medical trip which lasted over a hundred days in the United Kingdom.

Garba speaking to THISDAY said: “Following the three months period of disuse, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units,” he said, explaining that it was impossible for his boss to operate from the office in that condition.

Garba, however, said this would not affect the effectiveness of Buhari’s work since the residence has an annex to the office, adding that the president had been carrying out his duties from home since he resumed.

However Personal Assistant to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmad explained through his twitter handle said that the President will temporarily operate from his official residence also located in the villa.

He said, “Some renovations are ongoing at the office, his fully equipped office in his residence. He will be back to the main office after the works,” he twitted. It was gathered that the renovation work was being carried out by the construction giant, Julius Berger and it was uncertain when or how long the renovation would last.

Dear Mr. President Sir: When I learned that you would be returning yesterday, I was glad because it means you eventually listened to our cries and yearnings. President Muhammadu Buhari and CharlyBoy You have returned at a time when our country needs you most to surmount the crucibles battering us as a people and a nation. Though for a very steep price, we never allowed our voices to go unheard and we are glad you ultimately listened to us. You have returned at a time when our great country is battling a slew of disastrous storms. This is a difficult time in our national history where insightful and sagacious leadership is greatly required. Now that you are back stronger, I would like you to become the rescuer that our country terribly needs at this trying time. As you may know, millions of students are currently at home doing nothing because their schooling was suddenly disrupted by the decision of their disgruntled lecturers to go on an indefinite strike. Some of these students are 3 months away from becoming graduates. This is the time to rekindle their hope before they become a nonentity to themselves and nuisance to the society. You must expediently attend to our ever-debilitating education sector, massively increase the budget for education and treat not only the ministers and permanent secretaries but also the lecturers and school heads alright. If the lecturers are well-paid and paid as at when due, they will gleefully impart knowledge onto our children who will become the leaders of this great nation tomorrow. Ensuing from my research, no Nigerian university is currently among the top 20 universities in Africa. This is a shame for a country touted as the Giant of Africa. We must raise the standard of our education sector tremendously. A country with a vibrant education is a country with a bright future. By investing massively in education, we indubitably bolster productivity in our economy and also transformational innovations that would avail our country of real greatness. Further to this Mr. President, one of the most pernicious threats beleaguering us today is insecurity of lives and properties. We are constantly being battered and forced to the grim reaper by different monsters in different quarters of the nation. In the north, the Boko Haram sect, Fulani herdsmen, the October 1st ultimatum and the IPOB agitation still depredating lives and properties. The people in other parts of the country are not safe either. Kidnappers are increasing by the day and hoodlums are flooding the streets every other day. This is the time to deliver on the mandate the Nigerian people gave to you. I believe that you will take every necessary step to quickly bring an end to these national threats just as you work assiduously towards exterminating the perennial economic hardship besetting the country.
