Governorship Elections: Prince Dapo Abiodun won Governorship Election in Ogun State

 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Ogun state, Prince Dapo Abiodun, as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.

INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka, who announced the final result at INEC office, Abeokuta on Monday, said Abiodun polled 241,670 votes to defeat his arch-rival and candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Adekunle Akinlade who had 222,153 votes.

Olayinka who declared the winner of the Saturday’s gubernatorial election at exactly 1am, puts the margin between the winner and the runner up at 19,517.

According to him, Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled 110,422 votes; Buruji Kashamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had 70,290 votes, while Dimeji Bankole of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) scored 9,666 votes.

Olayinka, who was flanked by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof Abdulganiyu Raji, and some security chiefs in the state, said “That Adedapo Abiodun of APC having satisfied the requirement of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared winner and returned elected.”

The results declared showed that out of the 2,375,003 voters registered, only 708,807 were accredited during the election, while the total valid votes was put at 680,947.

Daily Trust reports a total of 20,969 votes were rejected during the election, while 7,100 votes were cancelled in some polling units across the state.

Meanwhile, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ogun State and its gubernatorial candidate, Adekunle Akinlade have rejected the election results as announced by the INEC, citing alleged manipulation of results.

The APM Campaign Director General, Sarafa Ishola who spoke alongside Akinlade at the party’s secretariat at Leme, Abeokuta, alleged that gubernatorial election which began peacefully on Saturday was allegedly hijacked by hoodlums and “unidentified uniform men” during the collation stage, and further manipulated the results in favour of APC.

Akinlade, on his part, said “The people of Ogun state have been raped”, while urging them to maintain peace while the leadership of APM explores all legal means to undo the alleged injustice.

However, the Chairman of APC in the state, Yemi Sanusi, noted that APM’s rejection means “acceptance of defeat”, saying the victory of APC was long expected.

“What Buhari government is doing at the top, people are satisfied. Go to the town and you will see that immediately they declare the result, you will see how happy the people will be,” Sanusi said in a statement in Abeokuta.

Daily Trust reports that APC won in 11 LGAs, APM won in 6 while ADC won 2, just as PDP got 1 LG. Ogun state has a total of 20 LGAs.

Buhari ‘ll give me a job if I lose — El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, said he was not jittery over the Saturday’s Governorship and State Assembly polls in the state.

The governor who spoke to journalists while waiting to cast his vote at his 024(A) Runka Street, Unwgan Sarki polling unit, said with President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection, he already got a job.


He noted that his members of staff were bound to be jittery because they might lose their job should he lose his reelection bid.

When asked if he was tensed up over the elections, El-Rufai said, “I am not under tension because President Muhammadu Buhari has won his election.

“Even if I lose, I already have a job. It is just my staff that are jittery because if I lose, they will lose their jobs.”


Also, the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Maj-Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade, described the poll as peaceful.

“The crowd is fairly large but the most important thing is that the poll is orderly and peaceful,” he said.

PDP supporters celebrate early lead in Kano

Supporters of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Kano State governorship elections, Abba Yusuf, took to the streets of Kano on Saturday to celebrate an early lead.

The celebration began for the supporters of the main opposition party’s candidate when news filtered through mobile phones that the party had recorded symbolic victories against Governor Abdulahi Ganduje’s All Progressives Congress in constituencies of his close allies.

The constituencies included that of the state Deputy Governor, Nasiru Gawuna, and former governor and senator-elect, Ibrahim Shekarau.

At the Magwan polling unit 056 where the deputy governor, Gawuna, voted, the PDP candidate polled 210 votes to defeat Ganduje, who polled197 votes.

Ganduje suffered a similar fate at  PU 022 at the Giginyu Primary School, where Shekarau voted.


Results from the unit indicated that the  PDP garnered 143 votes to defeat Ganduje who polled 91 votes.

At PU 029, located at Zango ward in Kano Municipality LGA, the PDP scored 147 votes, while the APC had 70 votes.

In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, the Kano State Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Independent National Electoral Commission, Garba Mohammed, said the collation of results and announcement of winners would commence on Sunday.

He said, “Right now, sorting and collation of votes are being done at the ward and local government levels. We expect to start here (state headquarters) tomorrow (Sunday).”

Lady Gives Birth By The Road While Going To Vote In Port-Harcourt

There was a massive celebration earlier today after a woman gave birth to a bouncing baby boy while going to vote in the governorship and states assembly elections in Rivers.

It was gathered that the woman went into labour while trying to exercise her franchise and was helped by some nurses and other women to give birth by the roadside at Rumuchuolu Eneka area in Port-Harcourt.

The residents were overwhelmed with joy after the delivery and have named the baby after the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, who is seeking re-election.

BREAKING: INEC Reschedules Elections In 3 Parts Of Benue Over Electoral Violence

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has rescheduled Governorship and House of Assembly elections in parts of Benue state as a result of electoral violence.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, for Benue state, Dr. Yilwatda Nentawe who made this known Saturday in Makurdi, listed the affected areas to include Mbalon ward in Gwer East, Yandev North ward in Gboko and Manger ll ward in Tarka local government areas of the state.


According to the REC, “the election in Mbalon is rescheduled because of the burning of electoral materials by thugs while in Yandev North and Manger II wards the elections will be rescheduled because our electoral officers were held hostage.”


Dr. Nentawe explained that elections would be held in the affected wards on a date to be announced by the umpire body.

Court Orders Arrest Of APC Governorship Candidate In Akwa Ibom

A Rivers State Chief Magistrate Court in Port Harcourt has issued an arrest warrant against Nsima Ekere, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom State.

S.D. Andrew-Jaja, the chief magistrate of the court, said Ekere and one Katungo Moljengo should be arrested “in compliance with Section 138 of the Rivers State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2015.”


The court's order, bearing the seal and signature of S.T. Dappa, Principal Registrar of the court, said the arrest warrant against Ekere and Moljengo was issued “in Port Harcourt under the seal of the court and hand of the presiding chief magistrate, this 5th day of March 2019".


The magistrate said the warrant for the arrest of Ekeme and Moljengo was issued because of the listed complaints and a suit marked PMC/MISC/15/2019 by one Multi-intelligence Development Limited.

Lagos politics and the ubiquitous Igbo

Igbo is a migrant tribe. Lagos is a melting pot. Igbos will always abound in Lagos, any Lagos. They can’t be stopped. And can’t stop themselves.  They have taken their industriousness  everywhere. They have become the mostly widely dispersed and widely entrenched race in Nigeria and perhaps Africa. Lagos is where things happen.  Igbos are made for Lagos.


The Igbo made Lagos their  other home before ethnicity came into Nigerian politics. But since then, and despite the  civil war , Igbos  have remained a major part of the Lagos project. They have improved Lagos. Lagos has empowered and polished them . You only need to visit Amuwo-Odofin .  Lagos has given them opportunity.  They have made Lagos thick, and tick. You only need to visit the Trade fair complex and the Alaba market.

Yorubas are remarkably gregarious and  tolerant.  They have let Lagos  open its arms to newcomers. Ethnic and religious tensions that have charred many Nigerian cities are almost non existent in Lagos.  Igbos , who are often victims of such strife have never seen violence targeted against them in Lagos since the civil war ended. Lagos,  and unlike Port Harcourt , restored abandoned properties to their owners  after the war. Lagos doesn’t bear grudges.

Some  Igbos have suffered some discrimination in the hands of a few landlords while seeking apartments to lease . But Lagos has not made discrimination against settlers preoccupation. Lagos is neither Jos nor Kaduna. The only lines that exist are perhaps class-lines which have perhaps been blurred by the fact that the whole city, despite the pretensions of those who live in Ikoyi and Victoria Island, has essentially become one huge slum.

Lagos favours competition. And yes , there have been clashes over market ownership and such like. And there were the days of the OPC and Hausa skirmishes. But generally, Lagos has been boisterous but  peaceful. For a city of over 20 million people of diverse cultures, Lagos has been comparatively serene.

It has to be. It’s only in Yoruba land that a  Muslim man would marry  a Christian woman  and the two religions  would share the children of their marriage, and happiness governs the home. Lagos imbibed that spirit.

Lagos politics has rarely  been contaminated by ethnicity or religion. The electorate sometimes doesn’t remember the religion of its governor. Indigenes of other neighbouring states have ruled Lagos and continue to play important roles in Lagos governance. An Igbo man was the commissioner for budget in Lagos for almost a decade. You can call it pragmatic politics. But I am yet to see  such pragmatism in Abia that once sacked all civil servants from neighboring Imo.

But Lagos, like all other organisms, is destined to experience growth  changes. And sometimes adaptations come with discomfort. Lagos is growing and developing its wrinkles. Fast developing urban centres pass through stages of social puberty. Voice may crack, facial hairs may sprout, some homogeneity and some innocence could be lost.

Yorubas have been accommodating. That which   reared its head in the confusion that engulfed some places in Lagos during the recent presidential elections should not be misunderstood. It was inevitable.

The Igbos have woken late. They have the number and resources to affect Lagos politics fundamentally. And they can’t be dictated to. Democracy grooms persons and groups to articulate , protect and promote group interests. It’s in fact, a civic responsibility. Igbos don’t have to explain or justify their electoral choices. The society benefits when its members participate fully, with all their resources, in its politics.

But Igbos must understand  that the Yoruba, like any other African tribe, would  resist anything that has the appearance of foreign domination. That is natural.

Enugu is Igbo land. Lagos is Yoruba land. But those who reside in Lagos are Lagosians. The constitution grants rights and privileges. Those who reside in Lagos and Enugu  can vote in those places regardless of their states of origin. But in a third world country, no ethnic group will let another come to its territory and dominate its politics without a grumble. Igbos would grumble if Fulanis acquired the numbers and sought to determine who governed Imo.

Nigeria is  a country. But not the  country  some of our forefathers dreamt  yet.  Nigeria is still an assemblage of ethnic nationalities.  So when members of an ethnic group reside in places distant from their homelands they will not be expected to puff  political smoke into the faces of their hosts, their citizenship  rights notwithstanding.

It may be time for a revolution in Lagos. But Igbos must proceed discreetly. No wise man attracts to himself envy and hostility. The  negative reaction of the average Yoruba to the march championed by Igbos should be expected. If it happened in Igbo land, Igbos would react more vehemently. We all remember how people reacted to the suggestion of cattle clones for herdsmen. That is the level of our national  cohesion and integration  for now. No Igbo man would sit astride and brook the argument that Enugu is not Igbo land.

But there is another truth.  Emotions aside ,  Lagos politics has changed fundamentally. There has been a significant demographic shift. When a group  achieves the sort of population Igbos have in Lagos that group  must be courted by the politicians, not hampered. In the United States the impact of blacks and Latinos on the electoral college system has become profound. White Americans who consider themselves as the landlords have reacted negatively. Nobody, no group enjoys such intrusions. Yorubas are not an exception. But everybody in America now knows it’s a new reality.

Lagos has grown. And its political dynamics cannot remain stagnant. What happened in Aguda and Okota on the morning of the presidential election could be regarded as expected tantrums. But there is a new equilibrium.  Tantrums won’t solve it. The political parties and their supporters have to get used to it.

It’s a complex social problem. Lagos could at some point become demographically unrecognizable to those who knew it in 1900. Cities are social organisms.

It is hoped that Lagos will take this  little conflict in its stride. But we won’t forget to note the hypocrites the conflict has unmasked . On the one hand, some  acclaimed pro-democracy activists have   supported devious  attempts to intimidate Igbos and curtail their influence in Lagos politics. These activists who routinely  masquerade as promoters of our constitutional democracy want Igbos to save their political activism for Igbo land.

On the other hand,  many of those championing the Lagos is ‘no-man’s-land’ agenda  are the same folks championing the dream of Biafra. If Lagos is no man’s land then the very idea of Biafra cannot exist. Because the Biafra project is premised on the belief that there is an Igbo land, with many Igbo cities, within Nigeria which is not a ‘no man’s land.’

Igbo and Lagos have had a symbiotic relationship.  Igbos must seek to improve Lagos. But tact rather than brashness would be more useful. Rather than run around streets  chanting slogans that irritate others, Igbos must develop ways to improve Igbo voter turn out in subsequent elections in the state. Igbos must make the building of inter ethnic bridges their priority. The average Igbo man is not timid, he is competitive. But his aim is not to dominate anybody,  neither in Lagos nor in Nigeria.

Court orders arrest of APC gov candidate in A’Ibom – Punch Newspapers

A Rivers State chief magistrates’ court in Port Harcourt has issued a warrant for the arrest of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Nsima Ekere.

Sir S.D. Andrew-Jaja, a chief magistrate, said Ekere, alongside one Katungo Moljengo, should be arrested “in compliance with Section 138 of the Rivers State Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2015.”

The magistrate, in a copy of the court order sighted by our correspondent, said he issued the warrant for the arrest of both Ekere and Moljengo after hearing argument from S.T. Soremi, the complainant counsel in a suit marked PMC/MISC/15/2019.

Listed as complainant in the suit was one Multi-Intelligence Development Limited.

Appeal Court takes final decision on PDP, Atiku’s access to INEC electoral materials. 

A three-man panel of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday granted presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar access to all materials used in the presidential elections.

The decision was made after the panel heard the ex-parte motion filed by Atiku Abubakar, seeking an order granting them access to inspect the electoral materials used for the February 23 polls.

News men recalls that Atiku had demanded that materials used for the February 23 presidential election be inspected.

Justice Abdul Aboki, head of the panel, in delivering its ruling ordered INEC to allow the appellant access to all electoral materials to enable him file and maintain an electoral petition, Channels Tv reports.

However, the court refused prayers 3 to 5 which sort for scanning and forensic audit, stating that a forensic audit does not fall under the terms envisaged by section 151 of the Electoral Act.
