Buhari react to Cameroon vs Nigeria:1-1 draw in Yaounde

Nigeria President 'Muhammadu Buhari' has called on Nigerians to celebrate the Super Eagles, following their 1-1 draw with Cameroon, in a 2018 World Cup qualifying game on Monday in Yaounde.Buhari posted a picture of himself watching the game on TV and tweeted

Let’s celebrate our Super Eagles, holding Cameroon to a draw in Yaoundé. The march to #Russia2018 continues, and they have all our support!”

The Eagles survived early pressure, before they took the lead through Simon Moses, who lashed in on a loose ball.Nigeria squandered several chances to double the lead, before goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa fouled Djoum Arnaud inside the area.

The referee pointed to the spot and Vincent Aboubacar kept his nerves to make it 1-1 with 15 minutes left. The result sees the Eagles remain top of Group with 10 points, while Zambia who play Algeria on Tuesday are second with four points.

Vincent Aboubakar’s 75th minute penalty kick on Sunday in Yaounde cancelled out Moses Simon’s 30th minute goal for Nigeria to draw 1-1 with hosts Cameroon in a Russia 2018 Qualifier. In this Africa Zone Group B Match Day 4 fixture in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the hosts were badly in need of a win, if only to save face.

After suffering a 0-4 humiliation in Uyo on Match Day 3 in Uyo, the Indomitable Lions needed to halt the Super Eagles’ stride which has placed them top of the group. The hosts started brightly, holding down the visitors who however went on to warm themselves into the game and even go in front by the half hour through Simon.

While the Eagles continued to threaten to increase their lead through sporadic attacks from the flanks, it was however the Lions who took advantage of their seeming contentment. With the Eagles dropping in pace, the hosts piled on the pressure to earn a penalty kick scored by Aboubakar in the 75th minute to the relief of the home fans.

As the game wore on to the end, and with the Lions appearing to have smelt blood with the equaliser, goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa had to do more to keep them at bay. The Eagles now have 10 points from four matches, having won their first three matches, and thus stay atop the group’s table. Cameroon on the other hand stay in third place with three points from four matches, having drawn three games and lost one.

Zambia are in second place with four points from three matches, with one win and one one draw, and visit Algeria on Tuesday in their Match Day 4 fixture. Algeria are in fourth place in the four-team group with one point from three matches, having drawn one game and lost two. Nigeria can be closer to winning the group on Tuesday if Algeria beat Zambia, since no other team can upstage it with two Match Days remaining. This will be if it can draw the Match Day 5 fixture at home to Zambia on October 7.

However, if Zambia beat Algeria on Tuesday to move to seven points, Match Day 6 fixture on November 6 will be the decider, even if Zambia secure an away draw on Match Day 5. The qualifiers will end on November 6, with the group winners qualifying for Russia 2018.(NAN)

SA v Senegal qualifier to be replayed

Fifa has ordered the World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal, played in November 2016, to be replayed after the referee was banned for life.

Fifa said in March that Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey had been banned for life after they found him guilty of unlawfully influencing a match result following South Africa's 2-1 win over Senegal in African Group D.

Fifa did not give further details but African soccer's governing body (CAF) said at the time that Lamptey had wrongly awarded a penalty to the South Africans and suspended him for three months.

The life ban for Lamptey was recently upheld by the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

"The Bureau for the Fifa World Cup Qualifiers ordered a replay of the qualification match between South Africa and Senegal held on 12 November 2016," Fifa said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course.

"As stated in the Fifa World Cup regulations, this decision shall come into effect immediately but shall be subject to confirmation by the Organising Committee for Fifa Competitions at its next meeting, scheduled for 14 September," added the Fifa statement.

Former PSL and Fifa referee Andile "Ace" Ncobo believes that referee Joseph Odartei Lamptey was wrong to award a penalty to Bafana Bafana in their World Cup qualifier against Cameroon on November 2. Lamptey has since been suspended for three months by CAF.

CAF had said that Lamptey was guilty of "poor performance" in the match and "awarded a wrong penalty for handball despite the fact that the ball never touched the hand of the player".

Thulani Hlatshwayo converted the penalty in the 42nd minute and Thulani Serero added another goal three minutes later.

Lamptey previously served a six-month ban, imposed by CAF, for wrongly awarding a goal during a CAF Champions League semifinal in 2010.

Leicester scramble to register Silva

06 September 2017, 18:19

Leicester face a fight with Fifa to secure the immediate availability of Portugal midfielder Adrien Silva after reportedly missing the deadline to register their new signing by just 14 seconds.

Craig Shakespeare's side agreed a £22 million deal with Sporting Lisbon for the 28-year-old on August 31, the final day of the summer transfer window.

But Leicester had to request an extension to complete the necessary paperwork and Fifa are reported to have told the Premier League club they did not receive it in time.

Contacted by AFP on Wednesday, Fifa declined to comment further on the matter.

Reports say the relevent email arrived only 14 seconds late, but Leicester insist they returned the signed paperwork before the deadline and are working with Sporting Lisbon and Silva to prove that and reverse the decision.

Should Fifa uphold their decision, it is unlikely Silva will be able to play for Leicester until they could officially register him when the transfer window reopens on January 1, 2018.

France-born Silva's move hinged on Danny Drinkwater sealing a switch to Chelsea and the window officially closed with Silva at Leicester's training ground and Drinkwater at Chelsea's Cobham base.

Drinkwater was announced as a Chelsea player in the early hours of September 1, with Leicester now waiting to see if they can rubber-stamp their Silva swoop.

"We are working with Adrien and Sporting Clube de Portugal to overcome some issues relating to the player's registration and exploring all options to find a resolution," a Leicester spokesman said.
